Expedition 1: Mount Kilimanjaro Charity Climb

Aim: To raise awareness about climate change and raise money for charity

The first Project C:CHANGE expedition is an ambitious one. On 11th Feb, 2010, 6 climbers from HK will scale Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak standing at 19,340ft high, to raise HK$600,000 for charity and raise awareness about man-made climate change.

Mt. Kilimanjaro stands at 19,340ft above sea level. To put this into perspective, that’s 15 times higher than the Empire State Building in New York! Above 12,000ft, altitude sickness can start to creep in, and while the mountain is not a hugely technical climb, only 50% of climbers make it to the top. Our climbers have been training and are fit, but they will have to summon every bit of mental and physical strength to reach Uhuru Peak on the 7th day.

The climbers on this first Project C:CHANGE expedition include celebrity models Rosemary Vandenbroucke, Jocelyn Luko, Anthony Sandstrom, as well as Janice Chia, Jack Brockway and expedition leader Sean Lee Davies. To see their bios, Click here

The team will begin the 8-day climb on Feb 11th and take the Lemosho route, which approaches the summit from the west. There is no accommodation on this route, so they will all be camping in the outdoors. The team will be using mobile solar panels to power their equipment on the mountain, including all audio-visual equipment used to document the climb. The team will also be ensuring that they leave nothing behind on the mountain except for their footprints.
